Gary McDougall

Gary McDougall is a certified mediator who recently retired from the law enforcement community after serving for over 25 years with the Calgary Police Service. During the last 8 years of his career, Mr. McDougall was a team leader with the Hostage/Crisis Negotiating Team and has based many of his 'negotiating with difficult clients' philosophies on the experience he gained in that work.

During the 8 years he was involved as a Hostage/Crisis Negotiator, Mr. McDougall was involved in 47 high-risk hostage/crisis situations. In addition to his involvement as an operational Negotiator, Mr. McDougall coordinated all of the training for the Calgary Hostage Negotiators. For the last three years, he also organized training for Hostage Negotiators from across Western Canada and the Northwestern United States.

Mr. McDougall believes strongly there are many parallels between negotiating in the business arena and negotiating with people in crisis. He effectively applies examples from his law enforcement experiences into the sessions he facilitates for the business community. Mr. McDougall has worked with a wide variety of business clients including:  The City of Calgary, Canada Olympic Park, Husky Energy, University of Calgary and Suncor Energy.

Mr. McDougall's specialties for his business clients cover a broad range of issues: training workplace groups in conflict management, dealing with difficult clients, ethics in the workplace, effective negotiation strategies, team-building, workplace bullying and workplace violence issues. He has also been responsible for teaching police officers these skills for a number of years and has been an instructor at the Canadian Police College in Ottawa.

He is a frequent presenter and facilitator at the University of Calgary and a session instructor at Mount Royal College.   On two occasions, Mr. McDougall has been asked to present at the FBI Training Academy in Quantico, Virginia where he facilitates training for new FBI Hostage Negotiators.

Certified in mediation and negotiation by the Alberta Arbitration and Mediation Society, Mr. McDougall also holds certificates from the University of Calgary in Business Management, Personnel Administration and Conflict Resolution. He has lived in Calgary all of his life and is an active volunteer with the Salvation Army providing sessions for their staff.
